Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Son Archie Surprised with Bike

2 min read

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle sent a special thank you to the owners of the Mad Dogs & Englishmen bike shop in Montecito, California, for giving Prince Archie a bike for his fourth birthday. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex sent their “sincere thanks for the thoughtful gift” and their “beautiful surprise” in a letter the bike shop shared on its Instagram page. Her letter also said: “The bike has brought a lot of joy and is the most appreciated by the family.”

Co-owner Martin decided to give the bike to little Prince Archie on the day of King Charles III’s coronation on May 6, which was also Archie’s fourth birthday. “She went to get one of our Specialized toddler bikes, they’re really nice bikes, and she said, ‘This is perfect, it has training wheels,'” co-owner Jennifer Blevins told PEOPLE. “So he went to get birthday balloons, flowers for Meghan and a birthday card, and he said, ‘Okay, I’m going to ride my bike and take her to her house.’”

When Martin arrived at Prince Harry and Meghan’s home, he was greeted by security guards who asked if he had received an invitation from the family. “He said, ‘I’m just a British company in town who wanted to give Archie a present,'” Jennifer said. A background check was conducted on the spot and Martin was finally able to drop off his surprise gift for Archie.

“It was very thoughtful because you took the time to write something personal and not just a general thank you,” Jennifer said about the thank you note. “His little sister, Lily, may also enjoy him as she grows up, he will be the one they both love.”

Prince Harry was determined to return to the United States to celebrate his son’s fourth birthday on May 6. He travelled to London to attend his father’s coronation at Westminster Abbey. After the ceremony, Prince Harry immediately returned to California for Prince Archie’s birthday and did not attend any of the other coronation celebrations.
